What to Do With Junk When Moving: Four Piles, Not One
Almost every stressful move we get called into has the same root cause. The homeowner treated “junk” as one undifferentiated problem to solve later — and later turned out to be the morning the movers arrived.
The fix is boring and it works: every item in the house belongs to exactly one of four piles, and you decide which pile before you start taping boxes. Not while the truck idles in the driveway.
Pile 1 — Goes with you
If you would pay to move it, it’s in this pile. That’s the honest test. Movers in Southwest Riverside County generally price by weight or by hours, so a dresser you don’t love is a dresser you’re paying to dislike in a new zip code.
Pile 2 — Donate or resell
Clean, working, and someone would use it tomorrow. Habitat for Humanity Inland Valley’s ReStore takes cabinets, doors, light fixtures, and furniture. Goodwill Southern California has drop sites throughout the valley. Both give you a receipt, which matters in April.
Pile 3 — Household hazardous waste
Paint, pool chemicals, motor oil, propane, pesticides, car batteries. These never go on a junk truck, in your trash bin, or in the moving van. Riverside County runs free household hazardous waste collection events specifically for this, and they’re your only correct answer.
Pile 4 — Junk
Broken, stained, unsafe, obsolete, or simply nobody’s problem but yours. This is the pile that either gets a plan or gets left in the garage for the new owner to find — which is how walkthroughs get delayed and deposits get eaten.

How to Get Rid of Junk Before Moving: A Six-Week Countdown
This is the sequence we wish every customer ran. It costs nothing but calendar discipline, and it’s the difference between a $195 quarter-load and a $595 full load.

Six weeks out — walk the house with a phone, not a box
Photograph every room, garage bay, closet, and side yard. Photos make you honest in a way standing in the room does not. Mark anything you already know is Pile 4.

Five weeks out — list what has resale value
Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp move faster in the Temecula Valley in the first two weeks of the month. If it hasn’t sold in ten days at your price, it isn’t worth what you think it’s worth. Drop the price or move it to donate.

Four weeks out — book the donation runs
ReStore and Goodwill both have windows and item rules. Confirm what they accept before you load your truck; getting turned away with a sectional is a genuinely bad afternoon.

One week out — book the junk truck
Book the haul for the day before the movers, not the day of. Empty rooms load faster, movers work cheaper, and you stop paying professionals to shuffle trash. This one change saves most people real money.
Why the day before beats the day of
Moving crews are billing you to carry things you intend to throw away. Every trip they make to a dumpster is a trip they aren’t making to the truck. Clearing Pile 4 first shrinks the move itself.
It also gives you a buffer. If we pull up and the load is bigger than you estimated, you have a whole day of margin instead of a moving van blocking the street.

Here’s what I’ve learned: nobody actually wants us there. They want the problem gone. So we quote in the driveway before we touch anything, we carry it out of the room ourselves, and we sweep up after. If a load ends up smaller than we estimated, you pay for the smaller load.

What to Do With Old Furniture When Moving: Five Honest Options
Furniture is where moves go sideways. It’s heavy, it’s sentimental, it’s worth less than you hope, and it does not fit down the stairs the way it came up.
Sell it — if it’s worth the friction
Solid wood, mid-century, and name-brand sectionals move. Particle board does not. Budget two weeks and a lot of no-shows in your driveway.
Donate it — if it’s clean and working
Charities have standards. Rips, stains, pet odor, missing hardware, or anything that smells like a garage will get declined at the door.
Give it to the buyer or landlord
Get it in writing. “They said they wanted it” is not a defense at the walkthrough when the buyer changes their mind.
Curb it — carefully
Temecula and Murrieta have bulky-item rules and pickup windows. Furniture sitting on the curb outside those windows is a code complaint, not a solution.
Have it hauled
Fastest path for anything broken, oversized, or upstairs. We do the lifting, you keep your back and your schedule.
Mattresses are their own problem
Most donation centers won’t take used mattresses at all, and California recycles them under a dedicated program.
Appliances stay behind more often than you think
Fridges, washers, dryers, and chest freezers rarely make the trip. They’re heavy, they’re often older than the move, and the new place usually has its own. Refrigerators and freezers also contain refrigerant, which means they can’t simply go in a dumpster — they require certified handling.
If you’re leaving one behind, decide now. An unplugged fridge sitting in an empty kitchen is a classic walkthrough delay.

What Nobody Will Haul on Moving Day
These items get refused by junk trucks, movers, donation centers, and your trash service alike. Handling them is on you, and it takes lead time. Find out three weeks out, not the morning of.
Paint, solvents & pool chemicals
Household hazardous waste. Riverside County collection events are free for residents and are the correct disposal path.
Propane tanks & fuel
Pressurized and flammable. BBQ tanks, gas cans, and camp fuel are refused on every truck we run.
Motor oil, antifreeze & batteries
Automotive fluids and car batteries have dedicated take-back programs. Never bag them with household junk.
Asbestos & unknown construction debris
Pre-1980 popcorn ceiling scrapings, old floor tile, or mystery insulation require licensed abatement. We will not guess.
Medical waste & sharps
Needles and pharmaceuticals go to a pharmacy or county program, not in a box marked “garage.”
Anything actively leaking
If it’s wet and you don’t know what it is, the crew stops. That’s not us being difficult; it’s the law and our insurance.

Moving Day Cleanup: The Walkthrough Checklist
Whether it’s a landlord holding your deposit or a buyer’s agent holding your close date, the final walkthrough is the only opinion that counts. Here’s what gets flagged.
Garage completely empty
Including the rafters, the hooks, and the paint shelf. Especially the paint shelf.
Side yard and behind the gate
The single most forgotten spot in every tract home in the valley.
Attic and crawlspace
Christmas bins live up there and they will not walk out on their own.
Under the sinks
Half-empty cleaners are hazardous waste, not trash.
Appliances disconnected and gone

Riverside County runs free household hazardous waste collection events for residents, and that's the correct disposal path. Plan for those three weeks before your move.
Do I have to carry anything to the curb?
No. We remove items from wherever they sit, including upstairs bedrooms, attics, garages, side yards, and behind gates. You don't need to move, stage, or prep anything. Point at it and we'll handle the lifting.
What happens to the stuff you haul away from my move?
We sort it. Usable furniture and household goods go to local donation partners when they'll accept them. Metal, cardboard, green waste, and electronics go to recycling. Only what's genuinely unusable goes to the transfer station. Refrigerators and freezers get handled separately because of the refrigerant.
