Refrigerants such as R-22 and R-134a have to be recovered by a certified technician under federal EPA Section 608 rules, so we haul the unit to a certified appliance recycling facility where the refrigerant is captured before the shell is scrapped. Please unplug the refrigerator at least 24 hours before pickup and empty out all food and liquids, because a defrosting fridge on a truck ramp makes a mess nobody enjoys.
