Run It Empty, Then Leave It Alone
If the washer still runs, put it through a spin-only cycle to drain the tub. Pull the clothes, the lint screen, and anything on top. That is the whole homeowner prep. You do not need to disconnect anything, and if a valve looks corroded, please do not try.

Washers and dryers do not carry refrigerant, so they are simpler than a fridge, but they are not scrap-yard-ready the minute they leave your house. Older units can contain mercury-bearing switches and PCB capacitors, both on the California list of Materials Requiring Special Handling. Under the DTSC Certified Appliance Recycler program, those have to be pulled by a certified facility before the appliance is crushed or shredded. Every set we haul goes to a recycler holding that certification, and that is the whole difference between recycling and dumping with extra steps.
Once the special-handling items are out, the shell, drum, motor, and counterweight get separated. Steel and stainless drums go to the mill, copper windings and wiring to a copper buyer, the concrete counterweight to aggregate. CalRecycle treats major appliances as a recoverable commodity for a reason: very little of a washer is actually waste.
