The Fall Decluttering Checklist for Temecula Valley Homes
What to clear out between the end of the heat and the first holiday guests, room by room. Plus the free drop-offs to use first, the stuff that can't go in anybody's trailer, and what it costs when you'd rather we haul it.

Why Fall
Fall is the best time to clean out around here
Spring cleaning is a back-East idea. In the Temecula Valley, nobody wants to empty a garage in August when it's 105 out there. The heat breaks sometime in October, the kids are back in school, and you've got maybe six weeks before Thanksgiving guests need a place to park and a room to sleep in. That's the window.
Our calls pick up every October for the same reason. People open the garage to get the holiday bins down and can't reach them. The patio set that looked fine in June is cracked and faded. The kids outgrew half their closet over the summer. So here's the list I'd work through, in the order I'd do it, plus the honest answer on which parts you should do yourself for free.

Then call me for whatever's left. You'll pay for a smaller load and the house will be clear before the turkey's in.
I'd rather quote you a quarter load than a full one. If you've got three pieces of furniture and a TV, the city's bulky pickup is probably the cheaper move, and I'll tell you that on the phone.
The Checklist
Room by room, in the order I'd do it
Start in the garage, not the living room. Whatever you pull out of the house has to go somewhere, and if the garage is already full you'll just be moving piles around.
1. Garage
Pull everything off the floor. Broken bikes, the treadmill nobody uses, empty moving boxes, the extra fridge that's running up your bill. Sort into keep, donate, and haul. Clear a path to the holiday bins before you touch anything else.
2. Patio and side yard
Summer's hard on outdoor stuff here. Cracked resin chairs, faded umbrellas, a rusted grill, the kiddie pool, cushions the sun cooked. If it didn't survive this summer, it won't survive the next one.
3. Closets
Swap the summer clothes out and pull anything that didn't get worn all year. Kids' clothes and shoes they outgrew over the summer go straight into a donation bag, not back in the bin.
4. Guest room
If it turned into a storage room, this is the one that matters before the holidays. Get the bed clear, the floor clear, and one dresser drawer empty for whoever's coming.
5. Kitchen and pantry
Expired cans and spices, mismatched containers, and the small appliances you haven't plugged in since last Thanksgiving. Working ones get donated. Dead ones go with the e-waste.
6. Bathrooms
Old medications, dried-out sunscreen, and cleaning products you don't use. The medications don't go in the trash; see the section below on what can't ride in a load.
7. Home office
Dead printers, old laptops, tangled chargers, and paper you don't need. Shred anything with account numbers before it goes anywhere.
8. Kids' rooms
Let them pick what goes. They'll part with more if it's their decision, and toys in good shape can go to a family that wants them before the holidays.
The three-pile rule
Every room gets three piles: keep, donate, and haul. Don't make a "maybe" pile. Maybe piles end up back in the garage, and then we're hauling them next October. If you honestly can't decide on something, put a date on the box. If you haven't opened it by spring, it goes.

Santa Ana Season
Clear the outside before the wind picks up
Fall here isn't just the holidays. It's Santa Ana season, and a lot of what people store outside is exactly what CAL FIRE tells you to get away from the house.
CAL FIRE's defensible space guidance says to clear flammable items out from under decks, balconies, and stairs, keep space between patio furniture, wood piles, and plants, and move wood piles farther from the house. That's a decluttering job. The stack of old lumber along the side yard, the broken fence panels behind the shed, the dead potted plants on the deck, the cardboard under the stairs: all of it comes out.
If you're in Redhawk, De Luz, or anywhere that backs up to brush, do this part first. Dead branches and yard debris can go in the green cart a little at a time, or we can take it in the same load as the garage junk. Our yard waste removal and weed abatement pages cover the bigger jobs.
Special Handling
What can't go in anybody's trailer
End of summer is when people find the pool chemicals, the half-empty propane tanks, and the paint from the spring project. None of that can ride in a junk load, ours or anyone else's.
- Pool chemicals, pesticides, solvents, and car fluids. Take them to a Riverside County household hazardous waste collection. It's free for county residents.
- Leftover paint and stain. PaintCare drop-off sites take it back for free. Find one on the PaintCare California locator.
- Propane tanks from the summer grill. Exchange the small ones where you buy them, and take empties or damaged ones to household hazardous waste.
- Batteries and fluorescent tubes. Household hazardous waste again. Lithium batteries are the ones that start truck fires, so bag them separately.
- Old medications. The DEA runs a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day each fall on a Saturday in late October, and many pharmacies keep a drop-box year-round.
Every crew finds a can of pool shock taped inside a moving box eventually. If we find it, it stays behind, and you still have to take it to the county. Pull it out first and save yourself the trip back. TVs, computers, and small electronics are different; we take those, and our e-waste guide explains where they go.
Do This First
The free routes, before you pay anybody
If you live in the City of Temecula, you get two free bulky item pickups a year from CR&R. Call them ahead of time to schedule. That's a couch and a mattress gone for nothing, and most people forget they have it. Murrieta and Menifee have their own hauler programs, so call your city's trash line and ask.
Next, donations. Furniture in good shape, working appliances, kids' gear, and clothes can go to Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, or Goodwill. Our donation and recycling guide lists who takes what. If you book us, we sort the donation pile out of the load and drop it off for you.
After that, whatever's left is what you'd pay to haul. It'll be a smaller load than you think.
What It Costs
Where a fall cleanout usually lands
We price by how much of the 12-yard trailer you fill, not by the item or the hour. Loading, the drive, and dump and recycling fees are in the number. You get it in writing before anything moves, and there's no deposit.

Fall Cleanout Questions
Questions we get every October
Mid-October through mid-November. The heat has usually broken, so working in the garage is bearable, and you still have a few weeks before holiday guests arrive. Book early in that window, because the week before Thanksgiving fills up fast.
City of Temecula residents get two free bulky item pickups a year. Call CR&R ahead of time to schedule one, then set the items out the way they tell you. Save them for the big single pieces, like a couch or a mattress, and let the smaller clutter go in donation bags or a haul.
Anything that burns and sits close to the house. That means cardboard and junk stored under decks and stairs, old lumber and fence panels along the side yard, dead potted plants, and brush. CAL FIRE's defensible space guidance asks you to clear those areas and keep wood piles away from the house.
The DEA holds a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on a Saturday in late October, with drop-off sites across the country. A lot of pharmacies also keep a drop-box year-round. Don't put medications in a junk load or flush them.
Take them to a Riverside County household hazardous waste collection. It's free for residents. Keep them in the original containers, don't mix anything, and keep them out of the junk pile, because no hauler can legally take them.
Clean decorations that still work usually can, especially in early fall when thrift stores are stocking up. Broken light strings, cracked inflatables, and anything moldy from the garage should go in the haul pile instead.
Swap the small grill tanks at an exchange cage where you bought them. Empty, dented, or expired tanks go to household hazardous waste. We can take the grill itself once the tank is off it.

Before, with at least a week of cushion. You need the guest room and the driveway back, and anything you haul out now doesn't have to be worked around all through the holidays. Anything left after the holidays can go with the Christmas tree and the boxes in January.
Bag the clothes for donation right away, before they go back into a bin. Toys in good shape can be donated too. Cribs and car seats are the exception; California has specific rules about what can be passed on, and we cover them in our crib and car seat guide.
Yes. Branches, dead plants, and old lumber can ride in the same trailer as the garage junk, and it's all priced by how much space the load takes. There's no separate charge for mixing them.
Most quarter and half loads are done in under an hour. A full two-car garage takes longer, and a full load includes one hour of loading time. If you've already pulled the hazardous stuff and the donations aside, we move a lot faster.
