Garage Cleanout Guide · Temecula Valley
How to Clean Out a Garage in One Weekend
Empty it, don't sort it in place. Pull everything out onto the driveway Saturday morning, sort it into keep, donate, sell, haul, and hazardous piles, and only put back what you'll actually use. Sunday is for drop-offs, the sweep, and putting the keepers on the walls. Two people can do a two-car garage this way in a weekend if the haul is booked before you start.

Line it up first
What Do You Need to Line Up Before Saturday?
Book where the stuff is going before you pull any of it out: a CR&R bulky-item pickup date, a donation drop, a dumpster, or a hauler. Then get gloves, a mask, contractor bags, tape, and a marker. The most common way a garage cleanout fails is a driveway full of piles on Sunday night with nowhere for them to go.
If you live in the City of Temecula you get two free CR&R bulky-item pickups a year, but they have to be scheduled ahead by calling CR&R at (800) 755-8112, according to the City of Temecula. Book that first and plan the weekend around the date. Other cities in the valley run their own programs, so check yours.
- ✓Leather work gloves for everyone, plus a pair of disposable gloves for anything mice have been into.
- ✓N95 masks. Old garages are dusty, and dust with droppings in it is the part you don't want to breathe.
- ✓A spray bottle and household bleach, for the droppings. More on that below.
- ✓Contractor bags, painter's tape, and a marker to label piles and boxes.
- ✓A hand truck if you have one, and a second person for anything over 50 pounds.
- ✓Your HOA rules, if you have an HOA. Some limit how long things can sit in the driveway.
Watch the calendar for heat too. In July and August a closed garage in Temecula is the hottest room on the property by late morning. Start at sunrise, or move the whole project to spring or fall. Our fall decluttering checklist is built around that.
Saturday morning
Why Empty the Garage Before You Sort It?
Because sorting in place doesn't work. You end up shuffling boxes from one corner to another, and nothing leaves. Pull everything out onto the driveway or a tarp, sweep the empty floor, and then decide on each thing as it sits in the open. It takes longer on Saturday morning and saves the whole weekend.
| Pile | What goes in it | Where it ends up |
|---|---|---|
| Keep | Things you used in the last year or will use this season | Back in the garage on Sunday, on a wall or a shelf, not on the floor |
| Donate | Furniture, tools, bikes, and household goods in usable shape | A donation drop-off; call first about hours and what they take |
| Sell | The few things worth more than about $50 | An online listing this week. If it hasn't sold in two weeks, it moves to donate |
| Haul | Broken, worn out, or nobody wants it | The bulky pickup, the trash cart a few bags at a time, or a hauler |
| Hazardous | Paint, oil, pool chemicals, pesticides, batteries, propane | Riverside County's free hazardous waste collection, never the trash |
A few rules make the decisions go faster. If you haven't used it in a year and wouldn't buy it again, it's out. Duplicates go down to the best one. A box you haven't opened since the move gets opened once; if you didn't remember what was in it, you probably don't need most of it.
Electronics get their own corner. TVs, monitors, and computers can't go in the trash in California. Our page on what counts as e-waste covers where they go.
Keep the hazardous pile away from everything else and away from the kids, in the shade, and leave every container in its original packaging. Don't combine half-empty jugs to save space. Our guide to household hazardous waste in Temecula lists where each one goes for free.
Gloves on
What's Hiding in a Temecula Garage?
Black widows, mouse droppings, and old chemicals that have been cooking through a few summers. None of it is a reason to skip the job. All three are reasons to wear gloves and a mask and to move slowly in the back corners.
Black widows
The western black widow is found in populated areas almost everywhere in California, according to UC IPM, and garage clutter is exactly where it hides. Bites are rare. Wear gloves, lift boxes from the bottom, and shake out anything that's been sitting, including shoes.
Mouse and rat droppings
Don't sweep or vacuum them dry. That puts the dust in the air, which is how hantavirus spreads. The CDC's cleanup steps say to spray them with a disinfectant or 1 part bleach to 9 parts water until they're soaked, let it sit 5 minutes, and wipe them up with paper towels. Cardboard boxes mice got into go out, contents and all.
Leaking chemicals
Rusted paint cans, swollen bottles, and a pool chemical bucket with a split lid. Don't open them to check. Set them upright in a plastic tub and keep them separate from everything else until drop-off day.
The heat
A packed garage holds heat, and the work is all lifting. Drink water, take the shade breaks, and stop when you're dizzy. The boxes will still be there in an hour.
If there are signs of mice, open the garage door and any windows for 30 minutes before you start and stay out while it airs, which is the CDC's advice for closed-up outbuildings. Then wear gloves the whole time. The CDC's hantavirus page explains why the dust is the part to avoid. Anyone who gets a fever and muscle aches in the weeks after cleaning up a lot of droppings should see a doctor and mention the rodent exposure.
Two people, minimum
How Do You Move the Heavy Stuff Without Getting Hurt?
With two people, a hand truck, and a plan for where each piece is going before you lift it. A chest freezer, a treadmill, a workbench, and a gun safe are where garage cleanouts turn into back injuries, and they're also the pieces that make the most sense to hand off.
Unplug a freezer the day before so it can drain, and tape the lid shut. Fold a treadmill if it folds, and pull the safety key. Take the drawers out of a tool chest and carry them separately. Anything bolted to the wall, unbolt before you pull on it.
Then be honest about weight. If two people can't carry it comfortably with a hand truck, stop. A gun safe or a pool table is a different job. Our page on heavy-item removal covers what it takes.
A dead garage fridge has one more catch: the refrigerant. It has to be recovered before the fridge is scrapped, so you can't just drop it at a scrap yard. A hauler that handles that, or your city's bulky pickup, is the easy way out.
Sunday
What Do You Do on Sunday?
Drop-offs in the morning, then the sweep, then the keepers go back on the walls. Anything left on the driveway Sunday afternoon should already have a pickup date or a hauler booked.
Load the drop-offs
Donations first, while they're still in the shape you sorted them in. Call ahead; Sunday hours are shorter at a lot of places.
Plan the hazardous run
Riverside County runs its free collection at the Lake Elsinore facility on scheduled days, so check the calendar and hold that pile until then.
Clean the floor
Wet-clean any droppings first, then sweep. Now's the time to see what's actually on the slab.
Put it back by zone
Tools on one wall, sports and seasonal on another, nothing on the floor that isn't a car or a trash can.
Park in it
Pull the car in Sunday night. If it doesn't fit, something else has to go.
There's no public dump in Temecula. If you're hauling the haul pile yourself, our where to dump in Temecula guide lists the closest drop-offs. Our donation and recycling page lists the charities and recyclers we use, if you want a starting point for the donate pile.
The honest math
When Is It Worth Calling a Crew?
When the haul pile is bigger than the free bulky pickup covers, when there's a fridge, a freezer, and a treadmill in it, or when the garage is packed to the door and the weekend is all you've got. A packed two-car garage is usually a $595 full load with us, carried out, hauled, and swept.
Here's how I'd decide. If you can sort it yourself and the leftovers are a couch, a dryer, and some bags, use the free bulky pickup and the trash cart. You don't need me. If the leftovers fill half the driveway, compare a rental truck, two or three dump runs, and your Sunday against a $350 half load or a $595 full load. Our dumpster vs. junk removal page runs those numbers in more detail.
A lot of people split it: they do the sorting and the keep pile themselves, then have us take the haul pile and the heavy stuff at the end. That works well, and it's usually the cheapest version of getting it done in one weekend. Prices and how it works are on our garage cleanout page, and if the garage is part of a move, see moving-day junk removal.

I wrote this for the people who'd rather do it themselves, because a lot of you can. The part that goes wrong isn't the sorting. It's starting without a place for the piles to go.

Quick answers
Garage Cleanout Questions
A light one, maybe. A two-car garage you can't park in is more than one person's Saturday once you count the sorting, the heavy pieces, and the drop-off runs. With two people and the haul already booked, a weekend is realistic.
Work gloves, closed-toe shoes, long sleeves, and an N95 mask if there's dust or any sign of mice. Leather gloves are worth it for the boxes in back corners, where black widows like to sit.
Sell the handful of things worth more than about $50 online, and donate the rest that's in usable shape. A full garage sale takes a weekend of its own, and whatever doesn't sell is still yours to deal with.
A few bags a week, yes, as long as the lid closes. Electronics, batteries, paint, chemicals, and appliances can't go in any cart. Big pieces go to a scheduled bulky-item pickup or a hauler.
A scrap metal recycler. Steel shelving, old tools, bike frames, and weight plates are worth separating, and some recyclers pay by the pound for clean metal. Call ahead about what they take and their hours.
Give everything a zone and a wall: tools on one side, sports and seasonal on the other, nothing left on the floor. Anything without a spot by Sunday night doesn't go back in.
Often, yes. If the boxes are manageable but there's a fridge, a chest freezer, and a treadmill, a quarter or half load covers those, and you keep the rest of the weekend for the sorting.
